이 책은 영어의 기본 정석 발음으로 시작하여 회화와 문장을 익히는 기초영어이다. 언어를 배우는 데에 있어서 먼저 우선 순위를 두어야 할 부분은 그 언어의 소리를 익히는 것, 즉 각 글자의 발음 원리를 이해하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다. 영어 초보자일수록 영어의 기본인 발음과 그 소리에 충분히 익숙해져야 하는데, 영어의 발음에는 우리 말에 없는 소리들이 있어서 이를 정확히 발음하기까지에는 상당한 훈련과 노력이 필요하다. 혀를 잘 굴리거나 무조건 연음 규칙을 외우는 일이 능사가 아니라, 각 소리를 정확하게 발음하도록 노력하는 것을 우선적으로 하는 일이 중요하다고 볼 수 있다.
이 책에서는 발음을 하는 구강원리와 소리를 내는 원리를 설명하고, 나아가 이를 다양한 회화와 문장으로 확인하도록 하였다. 그 이유는 각 Unit의 회화마다 그 상황이 다양하기 때문에 회화를 통한 발음 학습의 흥미를 높여줄 수 있다고 보았기 때문이다. 정확한 발음을 익히면서 동시에 상황에 따른 대화를 접하는 훈련을 가미할 경우 학습 효과가 배가될 수 있을 것이다.
각 Unit에 나오는 샘플 단어는 특정 발음을 대표할 수 있는 비교적 쉬운 단어들을 선택하였다. 이 단어는 두 명의 원어민이 반복해서 두 번 들려 줄 것이며, 이 샘플 단어를 포함하고 있는 회화 및 문장을 통해서 발음을 반복해서 들을 수 있다. 이 책에서는 모두 55가지의 기본 발음을 정리하였는데, 모음 편에서 28개, 자음 편에서 27개의 기본 정석 발음을 훈련하게 되면, 향후 다양한 연음 규칙과 불규칙한 발음들을 학습하는 데에 커다란 도움이 될 것이다.
